Max L Fox Obituary, Death Cause – Max L. Fox, Sr., age 87, was a resident of the Jacks Creek Community. On Friday, May 12, 2023, he passed away at the CarePartners Solace Centre in Asheville and went to be with the Lord. Born and raised in Yancey County, he was the step-son of Irene McIntosh Fox, who took care of him when his biological mother passed away when he was just four years old. His biological parents, Love and Alma Franklin Fox, both passed away before he was born. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Lucille Laughrun and her husband, Roy; his brothers, Ben Fox and his wife, Faye; his brother-in-law, Roger Penland; and his sister-in-law, Shirley Young Bailey. He is also survived by his wife, Shirley Young Bailey.
Max was a successful local entrepreneur who created a number of businesses in the area, the first of which he and his brother Ben established in 1957. These ventures included a trucking company, Fox Brothers Grading and Paving, and a number of other enterprises. In 1977, Max and Ben jointly purchased the business that would later be renamed Fox Country Store. At the West Burnsville Baptist Church, Max served as an usher for a good portion of his lifetime in addition to being a devoted member there for over 54 years. Most significantly, he was a cherished father and “Pa” to his offspring and grandkids, as well as a devoted partner to Jeanette throughout their nearly seven decades of wedded bliss.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Jeanette Bailey Fox; daughter, Amy Fox Johnson and husband, Shane of Burnsville; son, Max Fox II and wife, Crystal of Burnsville; three grandchildren: Bailey Johnson, Brinley Fox and Brystal Fox; brother, Bill Fox of Burnsville; sister, Linda Penland of Angier; and three brothers-in-law: Philip Bailey and wife, Ann of Easley, SC, Ronnie Bailey and wife, Shirley of Lewisville, and Richard Bailey and wife, Judy of Matthews. There are several nieces, nephews, and other members of the extended family that have made it.
