Marc Couch of the DPS, the collision took place at 2:10 a.m. on Sunday, May 14, 2023, on the portion of U.S. Highway 287 that is located approximately 0.5 miles west of Wichita Falls. According to Sergeant Couch, a Chevrolet Tahoe from 2007 that was involved in a separate accident earlier in the morning and was now disabled in the northbound lanes of the highway. He stated that the lights on the vehicle were not functioning properly.
The driver of the truck tractor observed the Suburban parked on the right shoulder and drove into the left-hand lane to make room for the Suburban. However, the driver of the truck tractor did not see the Tahoe that was disabled in the left-hand lane. The truck tractor initially collided with the Tahoe, and then it impacted the suburban vehicle. Following the impact, both the driver of the Tahoe and the passenger in the vehicle were thrown from the vehicle, as stated by Sergeant Couch.
According to the preliminary investigation conducted by the Department of Public Safety, a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban driven by John Michael Christopherson, 24, of Midlothian, arrived at the scene of the collision and pulled over to the shoulder to offer assistance to the driver and passenger of the Tahoe.
According to Sgt. Couch, a truck tractor that was pulling a semi-trailer was going northbound on U.S. 287 when it reached the prior crash site, which consisted of a Suburban that was parked on the right shoulder and a Tahoe that was disabled in the left lane of traffic.
Both Francisco Sanchez Sustaita, 45, the driver of the Tahoe, and Rocio Rodriguez Hernandez, 43, the passenger in the Tahoe, both of Chillicothe, were declared dead at the scene at 2:12 a.m. on Sunday, May 14, 2023. Sgt. Couch said both of them were from Chillicothe. Both of them were from Chillicothe. Christopherson, who had stopped to help the driver of the disabled vehicle, was reportedly taken to United Regional Hospital with injuries that rendered him unable to continue helping.
